Mint Hospital Introduces Da Vinci SP and Expands Operating Rooms: From Uterine Fibroids to Robotic Surgery

#MintHospital Ceremony Commemorating the Introduction of the Latest Single-Port Robotic Surgery Equipment Da Vinci SP and Expansion of the Robotic Operating Room 2026.09.09

Mint Hospital has expanded its operating rooms dedicated to women's diseases in conjunction with the introduction of the Da Vinci SP (Single Port) robotic surgery system.

Ki Gyeong-do, Director of the Women's Medical Center at Mint Hospital (Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Doctor of Medicine), stated, "By additionally introducing the da Vinci SP following the existing da Vinci Multiport robotic surgery equipment, we have further expanded the scope of application for single-port robotic surgery."

◆ Separation of surgical systems based on characteristics of women's diseases and surgical difficulty

Mint Hospital has established three operating rooms dedicated to women's diseases, consisting of a 4K laparoscopic and hysteroscopic operating room, a Da Vinci X (multiport) robotic operating room, and a Da Vinci SP (singleport) robotic operating room. Various surgical methods can be selected depending on the characteristics and difficulty of the surgery for women's diseases such as uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, ovarian tumors, and endometriosis.

The da Vinci X features a multi-port system in which multiple small ports are installed in the abdomen to move each robotic instrument independently, offering strengths in a wide surgical range and traction and suturing at various angles.

In contrast, the da Vinci SP is characterized by a mechanism in which a camera and multiple articulated surgical instruments enter together through a single port and unfold individually inside the body, complementing the maneuverability and accessibility of conventional single-port laparoscopic surgery.

Mint Hospital uses the Da Vinci robotic surgical system exclusively for surgeries involving women's diseases. According to Mint Hospital, rather than applying the latest equipment uniformly to all patients, the plan is to select the appropriate method among laparoscopic, hysteroscopic, multiport robotic, and single-port robotic surgery by considering the size, number, and location of fibroids, the degree of uterine deformation, the presence of adhesions, and pregnancy plans.

Another feature emphasized by Mint Hospital is the process of carefully screening whether a patient actually requires treatment before deciding on a surgical method.

For women's diseases, treatment methods for uterine fibroids can vary depending on their size, location, and number, even if they are the same type. In some cases, it is difficult to evaluate all associated conditions, such as multiple fibroids distributed throughout the uterus, adenomyosis, ovarian disease, or endometriosis, using only a simple ultrasound.

Accordingly, Mint Hospital utilizes pelvic MRI as needed to examine the entire structure of the uterus and ovaries, and determines the direction of treatment by having the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Department of Radiology jointly review the images.

In particular, it highlights as a strength that not only surgery but also non-surgical treatments such as uterine artery embolization (UAE) can be compared at one institution through collaboration with the Department of Interventional Radiology.

What is more important than the latest robotic technology is a treatment method tailored to the patient.

Center Director Ki Gyeong-do stated, “As robotic surgical equipment advances, the scope for performing precise surgeries with smaller incisions than in the past is expanding,” adding, “In particular, the introduction of the da Vinci SP has made it possible to complement the instrument angles and movements that were limited in conventional single-port surgery.”

He continued, “However, just because it is the latest technology does not mean that Da Vinci SP surgery is the best option for all patients,” explaining, “Multi-port robotic surgery may be more advantageous when uterine fibroids are very large or widely distributed, and hysteroscopic surgery may be suitable for lesions protruding into the uterine cavity.”

He also said, “The goal of the Mint Hospital Women’s Medical Center is not to fit patients into a surgical method, but to accurately identify the location and extent of the lesion through precise examination, select the most suitable surgical method, and, if necessary, find the best direction of treatment, such as non-surgical or hybrid treatment, through collaboration.”

Mint Hospital plans to further strengthen its integrated treatment system for women's diseases by expanding its dedicated operating room. This system allows for the selection of treatment methods tailored to the patient's condition, ranging from diagnosis to laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery, multi-port robotic surgery, SP single-port robotic surgery, and uterine fibroid embolization.
